The Brussels 5G Assembly

EVENT OVERVIEW

The 5G Assembly is taking place at the Concert Noble, Brussels on 20 November. Organised by Huawei, alongside a number of event partners representing NGOs, technology companies and vertical industries, it will bring together 150-200 stakeholders (including policymakers, connectivity providers, vertical industries, academia, NGOs, media and more) for a full day of discussion and debate.

The theme for this year is ‘Choose a Smarter Future.’ The focus will be on the potential that 5G offers to make a big difference across all areas of society and to help tackle some of the biggest global and societal challenges, such as climate change, deforestation and poverty. It will also explore more generally the importance for all parties to come together and play a part in delivering the potential of 5G for Europe, and crucially, how policymakers and industry can work together to deliver a strategy to ensure Europe is a 5G leader and not a 5G follower.

Session 2: Digital Leader or Digital Follower? Ensuring Europe is in control of its digital destiny

In today’s connected world, the digital industry is increasingly central to the development of all aspects of society. Those who are leading the way and have control over digital technologies are able to gain a position of strength in other areas and even influence aspects such as economic, societal and political outcomes. It is therefore vital that Europe maintains its position at the digital ‘top-table’ and stays fully in control of its digital destiny. This session will look at the challenges and opportunities ahead and at what needs to be done to achieve this.
– As we move into the connected world of 5G and beyond, how can Europe ensure that it is a leader and not just a follower in the development and roll-out of technology?
– What challenges and opportunities are emerging both in Europe and on the global stage, and what drivers are affecting Europe’s present and future capabilities in digital technologies?
– How can Europe can best protect its strategic interests in the emerging connected world, and crucially ensure that it stays in control of its digital destiny?
– How important is a robust and reliable cybersecurity system in delivering this, and to what extent can the common EU approach to security of future 5G networks currently being developed by the Commission held deliver this?

Session 4: Generating Value beyond Connectivity

The rollout of 5G networks and technologies only signals the start of the 5G journey. The next step now needs to be to integrate 5G into everyday life and push adoption beyond what is considered as the ‘traditional’ telecommunication environment of broadband connectivity. 5G has the power to transform almost all aspects of society. How can stakeholders work together to deliver this? – What is really expected of 5G, and how can it improve the quality of everyday life for individuals and societies?
– What verticals are leading the way in the adoption of 5G and what new use cases are emerging that weren’t possible with 4G?
– How can stakeholders work together to encourage businesses and consumers to embrace 5G technologies, and start to integrate them into their everyday life? What are the challenges that need to be faced? What role does education and communication need to play?
